"Hermaphrodite Brig"
A rig which has unfortunately been incorrectly referred to as a
"Brigantine" for the last 100 years. The rig for a
Brigantine has square tops'ls & t'gallents on the main mast.
The Brig is the same but also has a mains'l (Main course). The
Hermaphrodite Brig has squares only on the foremast. This
note is supplied courtesy of Captain
Michael Rodaway MN , an experienced sailor with 7 years
in square-riggers, half that time as master.

drawing of the Marie Sophie. Click the button for

Brigantine: Drawing of a true
Brigantine which, Capt Michael comments, "is a rig that is
pretty much extinct to my knowledge and has been for about 100
years".
